Beyond the consultation

Care, community and curiosity.

These photographs show a doctor beyond routine consultations: listening to families at medical camps, working with volunteers during relief and public-health initiatives, and travelling with an appetite for learning through experience.

The settings change, but the thread is consistent—meet people where they are, remain curious and try to be useful.

A listening-first approach

Sometimes the child needs treatment. Sometimes the parent needs an explanation. Often, both matter.

A pediatric consultation is rarely just a symptom and a prescription. Parents arrive with a sequence of events, previous medicines, things they have read, advice from family, fears about what might happen next, and often a very specific question they have not yet said aloud.

Dr. Rajiv’s first job is to hear that story properly. What happened first? What changed? How is the child behaving between symptoms? What has already been tried? What exactly is worrying the family?

Then comes examination, clinical reasoning and a decision: medicine, investigation, observation, counselling, referral—or sometimes simply allowing a self-limiting illness to take its course with clear warning signs.

How I practise

Thoughtful care has a rhythm.

  1. 01

    Listen before prescribing

History is not a formality. The order in which symptoms appeared can materially change what they mean.

  2. 02

    Explain before escalating

Parents cope better when they understand the likely diagnosis, expected course and what would make us change the plan.

  3. 03

    Antibiotics when indicated

An antibiotic is valuable when the illness calls for it. It is not a stronger version of symptomatic treatment.

  4. 04

    Investigate for a reason

A test should answer a question or influence management. Testing can be important; unnecessary testing can also create confusion.

  5. 05

    Use growth, not comparison

The child’s trajectory matters more than whether another child of the same age looks taller or heavier.

  6. 06

    Know when to refer

Good medicine includes recognising when another pediatric superspecialist should become part of the child’s care.

Reflections, travel and life beyond medicine.

Families I’ve grown with

Some of my patients are not children anymore.

Over more than two decades, some relationships have travelled from infancy to school, adolescence and college. This is one of the unusual privileges of pediatrics: you do not merely treat episodes of illness; sometimes you watch a person grow up.
